Blinds for Large Windows

Posted on 24th April 2013 by Gemini Blinds

From humble beginnings as simple yet effective window coverings, blinds have developed into versatile and stylish additions to any internal décor, offering practicality and elegance across a range of designs.

For a long time, some window shapes and locations have solely been the keep of curtains, with blinds unable to cope with awkwardly designed or positioned windows. However, in recent years, advances in made to measure technology have allowed the possibility of blinds on all windows, from airy modern apartments to contemporary office blocks; corner conservatory windows to difficult to reach skylights.

These days, extra wide blinds are available from most blind suppliers and manufacturers to avoid the necessity of having to use two or three separate blinds to cover large areas of glass, ruining the contemporary look of a room.

Aluminium Venetian Blinds

Aluminium Venetian blinds are particularly suited to this application; a light yet sturdy style that is able to maintain its shape across long distances, as well as allowing for easy raising and lowering. Using larger slats will reduce the risk of Venetian blinds being dwarfed when installed on larger windows.

Patio & Bi-Folding Doors

In the case of large, wide patio doors or bi-fold doors, a vertical blind or panel blind may be the best solution, as they are capable of opening sideways to allow for the doors to be opened without damaging the blind.

Considerations

As with most roller and Roman blinds, considerations must be made about the practical obstacles that may be encountered when dealing with unusually large designs. Firstly, with blinds over a certain weight, the mechanism used to raise and lower it will have to be adapted accordingly. The usual cord and cleat method will need to be replaced by a geared mechanism that uses a continuous chain operated head rail, or even a motorised model.

Obtaining sufficient width of fabric is also a tricky process, and in most cases necessitates the stitching together of several separate blinds. While this may sound like a simple solution, ensuring that intricate patterns match up can be an extremely complicated procedure – especially on those fabrics that have an asymmetrical design.

Although creating fabric-based Roman and roller blinds for large windows is possible, as discussed above, other styles are generally more appropriate, with vertical blinds and stronger Venetian models the best options.
